Why Latitude

Tools should expand your liberty.

Lemon Latitude exists to expand the latitude people have to create. Imagine and edit images privately on your own machine, reliably.

This manifesto describes our long-term direction. The first Windows MVP is a local still-image creation and editing app: Create from text, Edit, Sharpen (Tikhonov), and AI Sharpen. Image-to-video and customer-selectable models are beyond the MVP scope.

The person comes first

Creative tools should serve the person using them. They should not quietly become authorities over lawful imagination, rewrite intent to satisfy a distant service, or require private work to pass through someone else’s computer. Latitude means room to choose the model, medium, storage, workflow, and result.

Liberty, bounded by harm

We believe personal liberty is strongest when paired with respect for other people. Lemon Latitude is built for lawful creation that does not harm others. It does not claim that a tool can erase the obligations of its maker or user. It does refuse to make broad surveillance, content inference, or paternalistic control the default architecture.

Law should serve the people

Law earns legitimacy by protecting rights, remedying real harm, and enabling peaceful cooperation. When coercive power mainly extracts from or controls people for the benefit of the institutions wielding it, legality alone does not make that power just; it becomes plunder wearing legal form. We can meet obligations currently in force while defending the right to criticize, reform, and replace rules that do not serve the people.

This is not disrespect for law. It is respect for individual moral agency. Software should give people the information, control, and privacy they need to obey the laws that apply to them; it should not appoint itself as a private police force or replace personal responsibility with opaque platform paternalism.

Law is contextual, jurisdiction-specific, contestable, and capable of change. An AI system that treats every current rule as permanent moral truth can obstruct the criticism, education, organizing, and peaceful reform through which outdated laws are replaced. Good software can help a person understand present obligations without making those obligations technically impossible to question.

Creative AI should not become a general-purpose rule-enforcement system. Lemon Latitude can expose facts, provenance, compatibility, and relevant notices while leaving lawful decisions with the person. Its hard boundaries protect the integrity of the machine and the clarity of the interface; they do not turn disputed social judgments into hidden model-routing rules.

A humane engineering tradition

This continues a humane engineering tradition once captured by Google's founding-era maxim, “Don't be evil”, and later by Alphabet's instruction to “do the right thing.” Lemon Latitude is not affiliated with Google or Alphabet, and its principle is its own: build tools that enlarge lawful human agency, reduce needless concentrations of power, and avoid causing or enabling harm to other people. A memorable maxim matters only when architecture makes it costly to betray.

An American civic inheritance

The Declaration of Independence treats liberty as an inherent right, government as an institution created to secure rights, legitimate power as dependent on consent, and reform as the people’s recourse when institutions cease to serve those ends. The Bill of Rights protects speech, assembly, petition, and security in one’s papers and effects, while recognizing that people retain rights beyond those expressly listed.

Those constitutional limits govern state action; Lemon Latitude invokes them as design inspiration, not as a claim that private software is the state. The lesson for AI is simpler: power should remain accountable to the people it affects.

Local by architecture

Prompts, source media, and creations stay on your computer. The MVP’s creation, editing, and sharpening tools run locally. Data that was never collected cannot become a private dossier, a breach, or a lever of control.

Recommendation without lock-in

Our longer-term goal is compatible private models, a personal model library, portable catalogs, and independent repositories. The MVP starts with three prepared AI tools so installation, repair, and everyday editing can be qualified as one dependable workflow.

True-to-Life

Our quality target is fidelity to reality and to the source: identity, anatomy, proportions, appearance, garments and accessories, scene, light, composition, and exact geometry. This is a quality target, not a guarantee that a generative model will preserve every detail. AI Sharpen may change brightness, color, edges, and subject features; the original stays available for comparison. Future motion work has its own realism goals and is outside the MVP.

A tunable model engine

A versioned catalog describes what a model needs: verified artifacts, checksums, license, publisher, compatibility, a trusted adapter, and typed tuning variables. The adapter validates and applies those values. Configuration remains declarative and cannot smuggle arbitrary executable plugin code into the engine.

A path for AI

Open interfaces, portable catalogs, local custody of models and data, and independently operated repositories let people and communities make choices that a small group of platform owners would otherwise make for everyone. Interoperability turns power into something people can exercise, not merely request. Lemon Latitude aims to demonstrate that decentralized control can coexist with clear provenance, dependable engineering, and individual responsibility.

A purchase is also a choice about what kind of technology gets built. Supporting Lemon Latitude is a practical vote for an American approach to AI grounded in local ownership, private thought, open interfaces, limited concentrated power, and personal responsibility.

Legible responsibility

Downloads require review. Sources, licenses, provenance summaries, disk needs, and adapter readiness stay visible. We will cooperate with valid legal obligations that apply to us, while minimizing the private data we possess in the first place.

Latitude is liberty with boundaries grounded in harm—not obedience grounded in mere discomfort.

A founder’s conviction

Lemon Latitude’s founder believes in God as the source of human dignity, conscience, moral agency, and natural liberty—in the broad, nonsectarian tradition expressed by the Declaration’s references to “Nature’s God” and a “Creator.” Liberty is therefore not a temporary permission granted by a government, corporation, or AI provider; it is part of what is owed to a human being. That faith is the source of this product’s commitment to personal latitude, not a creed the product imposes on its users. People of every faith or none are welcome to use a tool designed to respect their agency.

Lemon Latitude exists to put capable tools back in the hands of the people doing the creating.
